The Chatham Islands is New Zealand's last frontier. Resting in the waters east of Christchurch, the Chatham Islands consists of about 51 islands, only two of which are inhabited - Chatham and Pitt. The rest of the islands now have limited access, but were previously used for farming and grazing. The islands are protected by the department of conservation, with the main island consisting of hilly land, inlets and lagoons, perfect for exploring!
The descendents of the first settlers on the Chatham Islands were the Moriori. The Moriori developed a distinctive culture in the islands. The rich history of the islands and its first people still hold a strong presence to this day. The J.M. Barker National Historic reserve, Hapupu, for example, is one of two national historic reserves showing remaining signs from the almost lost Moriori culture. The Reserve is definitely worth visiting while you are here. The Reserve is accessible by car.
Waitangi is the largest settlement in the Chatham Islands. In Waitangi there is one main store and one café. Hotel Chatham also offers a waterfront restaurant which doubles as a bar, perfect for sitting back and relaxing over a great meal of local seafood and a glass of wine.
