Walking Tours
There is always something to do while staying at Hotel Chatham. Make the most of the outdoors and get back to nature by enjoying one of the great walks on offer. All walks are with a tour guide and vary in time and distance to suit all. Hotel Chatham is happy to assist with bookings and further information on the walking tours available, should this be required.
Wharekauri Walk
Spectacular views moderate to hard walking. Walking time is approximately 6.5 hours. Best suited to fit walkers and trampers.
Okawa Walk
Historically a significant part of the Kaingaroa area. Easy to moderate walking. Walking time is approximately 5 hours
Ranga Ika Walk
Experience breath-taking views of the southern coastal cliffs plummeting 200 metres into the sea, and across Pitt straight to the islands. Easy to moderate walking. Walking time is approximately 3.5 hours.
Te Awapatiki (the pathway of the flounder)
Through this walk you will encounter special significance to the Moriori. This walk is rich in diverse flora & fauna. Total walk time is approximately 5 hours.
Taia Walk
An optional overnight stay at Taia House can be arranged on request. A short excursion can be made from the house out through Taia Reserve to the coastline. This walk has Moriori tree carvings at the northern end of Lake Kairae. Total walk time is approximately 3 hours.
Pitt Island Tour
With its majestic cliffs rugged scenery, bush reserves and natural way of life, Pitt Island is recognised as the jewel in the Chatham’s crown. Pitt Island is home to some of the worlds rarest birds and plants and is the first inhabited place in the world to witness each new day. Highlights include: Mt Hakepa, Glory cottage, Ellen Elizabeth Preece Conservation Covenant, Flower Pot jail, Waihere Head, Moriori and European history.
Pitt island Tours are available 7 days a week. Tours are subject to weather and aircraft availability. Bookings are essential, minimum number of 4 required.
The following tracks are in Department of Conservation Reserves
J. M. Barker (Hapupu) National Historic Reserve
This walk has an excellent example of mature Kopi forest with a dense under story of mahoe and kopi seedlings. Walking time is approximately 10 minutes which will take you past the Kopi tree carvings.
Nikau Bush Scenic Reserve
This area protects the largest stand of Nikau remaining on the main Chatham Island. The Nikau are flowering from December through to January. Walking time is approximately 1.5 hours
Henga Scenic Reserve
This reserve has it all - regenerating broadleaf forest, limestone outcrops, sand dunes, and great views of Petre Bay. Walking time is approximately 2 hours.
General Tours
Locally owned Air Chathams run a service from three locations, Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch. Booking early with Air Chathams can reduce your airfare. Package
Hotel Chatham provides package tours, ideal for groups of more than 10 people.
The main season is from 1 October until 30 April.
The package includes:
- All accommodation
- All food - including continental breakfast, packed lunches, evening 3-course meals specializing in local produce & seafood
- Airport transfers
- Daily tours throughout Chatham Island with tour guides knowledgeable in local history & culture, flora & fauna, landforms etc.
- Concessions
- Only money required for personal use (souvenirs, drinks)
Additional excursions costs:
The package price from $210 per person per day.

The Hotel Chatham and Traveller's Rest combined holds 29 people.
Additional accommodation is available at The Lookout and Beach House.
Please let us know of any dietary requirements and of your groups special interests (ie, ornithology, geology, fishing/diving etc.) well in advance so we can best cater for you.
CANCELLATION POLICY: Any no shows or cancellations received within 10 days may incur a charge of the first nights accommodation tariff.
